The bitter truth about sugar.





You may not realize just how much sugar you are actually consuming, 


Two hundred years ago, the average American ate only 2 pounds of sugar a year. In 1970, we ate 123 pounds of sugar per year. Today, the average American consumes almost 152 pounds of sugar in one year. This is equal to 3 pounds (or 6 cups) of sugar consumed in one week!See source and PDF

Research from UCSF University of California San Francisco explains,
Expert panels worldwide have made consistent recommendations on daily sugar intake. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar per day for women and 9 teaspoons (38 grams) for men.1 The AHA limits for children vary depending on their age and caloric needs, but range between 3-6 teaspoons (12 - 25 grams) per day. See full article

Yet the sugar in one 12-oz soda is as much as in 1 orange + 16 strawberries + 2 plums?!? 

A quote from an article on Forbes.com titled "Research Shows Cocaine And Heroin Are Less Addictive Than Oreos"  talks about high fat and high sugar diets.  

"Our research supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do," [neuroscientist Joseph] Schroeder said. "It may explain why some people can't resist these foods despite the fact that they know they are bad for them."...

"My research interests stemmed from a curiosity for studying human behavior and our motivations when it comes to food,” said [neuroscience major] Jamie Honohan. "We chose Oreos not only because they are America’s favorite cookie, and highly palatable to rats, but also because products containing high amounts of fat and sugar are heavily marketed in communities with lower socioeconomic statuses."...Read more...
